"It’s cold, even for Los Angeles. Deer, raccoons and other urban wildlife duck out of sight as I climb down the concrete embankment. A startled egret drops her catch and flies off, just missing the power lines overhead. In the background, the I-5 freeway hums with early morning traffic. Downtown Los Angeles skyscrapers, faint in the distance, provide an unusual counterpoint to the landscape of trees and the placid river.
I am here to sketch the river for an upcoming art show I am preparing. I have my Moleskine Pocket Watercolor Sketchbook, a Sanford Uniball Micro pen and a paint box with Holbein watercolors. I stand at the river’s edge and hold my sketchbook as I draw. Using the extreme horizontal format of both pages allows me to easily capture this magnificent panorama view. I work fast, sketching the bridge and literally throwing on paint as the sun begins to peek up from behind. The paper accepts the paint effortlessly. The colors glow. Done with the first one. I let it dry, then pocket my gear and hike up the river to the next inspiration. - Joseph Stoddard
