The watercolor books are bound at the shorter end do you have plenty of room to work with. It also helps the book stay open as you sketch, paint and dry. Of course, feel free to flip it over and work top to bottom for a portrait view, as well. The elastic closure, which helps keeps the book closed when not in use, is located at the bottom of the book (about 1 inch from the base). In addition, the expandable accordion inner pocket inside the back cover is oriented vertically, (opening is ~3.5 inches).
